The Escambia County Natural Resources Conservation Division recently partnered with Girl Scout Cadette Troop 95023 to install a bat house at the Perdido Bay Boat Ramp, which will help address bat conservation by providing a local safe haven for bats.
Troop 95023 chose this project for their Silver Award, one of the highest awards in Girl Scouting that includes a long-term project to address an issue’s root cause.
The project included the installation of an artificial bat roost, or bat house, to increase bat populations while naturally decreasing the local mosquito population and the use of pesticides. Not only are bats a natural pest control, but they are also beneficial pollinators.
Escambia County Natural Resources and Troop 95023 encourage the public to visit the bat house and scan the QR code located at the base of the structure to learn more about the many benefits of bats in our community.
Escambia County is proud to host one of these bat houses at a county park and looks forward to seeing it host a colony in the future.
